About Croatian

Croatian is a South Slavic language spoken by approximately 5.6 million people, primarily in Croatia, as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Emerging as a distinct language in the 19th century, Croatian underwent standardization and uses the Latin script exclusively, a choice influenced by historical ties to Western Europe.

Croatian features three main dialects: Shtokavian, Kajkavian, and Chakavian, with Shtokavian forming the basis of the standard language. The language serves as a key component of Croatian identity, fostering a sense of cultural unity and continuity.
