Rune translator

Convert English text to Elder Futhark runes (and runes back to Latin letters) with a deterministic, letter-by-letter mapping. Type a name or phrase and get it in the 24-rune Germanic alphabet — the same futhark used for runic inscriptions, jewelry, and tattoos.

About this scheme

The Elder Futhark is the oldest form of the runic alphabet, used by Germanic peoples from roughly 150 to 800 CE before evolving into the Younger Futhark (Viking-Age Scandinavia) and the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc (early England). It has 24 runes, each with a name and sound — ᚠ fehu (wealth), ᚢ uruz (aurochs), ᚦ thurisaz (giant). Note that runes wrote Old Norse and Old English, not modern English, so a letter-for-letter mapping is a modern convention for names and short phrases rather than a historically authentic transcription. A few modern letters (c, q, v, x, z) have no Elder Futhark rune and map to their closest sound.
