Shakespeare, printable: free side-by-side translations for your classroom

Every play here is the complete original text next to a plain modern English translation — readable online scene by scene, printable per scene, or downloadable as a whole-play PDF. No account, no paywall, and no ads on any of these pages. Free to print and photocopy for classroom use.

Whole-play PDFs

Printing a single scene

Open any scene (for example Romeo and Juliet, Act 1 Scene 1) and use the Print / save as PDF button in the toolbar. The printout is the same two-column layout: original on the left, modern English on the right, with matching colors pairing each sentence to its translation.

What's in the translations

  • Original text from the public-domain Project Gutenberg Globe edition; modern translations written in-house (never copied from other guides).
  • Side-by-side reading with sentence-level color pairing, a modern-only mode, and hoverable archaic words on every scene page.
  • Scene summaries, famous lines explained, and study sections on the most-taught scenes.
  • A paste-any-line translator for passages from any edition your class uses.

Using these with a whole class, department, or district? We'd love to hear how — tell us about your classroom and we'll let you know as new plays and teaching materials are added.
