How Greek documents come out

Upload a PDF, Word file, presentation, spreadsheet or a photo of a paper document and translate it between English and Modern Greek. A birth certificate from a Greek municipality, a notarial deed, a tax notice or a journal article comes back as readable English, and an English contract, transcript or report comes back as natural Greek, with tables and headings kept in place. Older documents in polytonic spelling and katharevousa can be uploaded too. Texts in Ancient, Koine or Byzantine Greek have their own page.

Modern Greek is written left to right in the 24-letter Greek alphabet, and its document problems are mostly about age. Since 1982 official Greek writing has used the monotonic system, a single acute accent per word plus the diaeresis; anything printed before that, and much church, literary and scholarly material since, uses the polytonic system with breathings, three accents and iota subscripts, which text recognition tends to drop or misread. Older official documents add a language layer: until the mid-1970s the language of administration, law and much of the press was katharevousa, an archaising register with older endings and vocabulary (γεννήσεως rather than γέννησης on a certificate heading, εις rather than σε), so a 1960s marriage certificate or land title reads very differently from one issued today. Greek typography has habits that survive translation badly: the question mark is the semicolon (;), the raised dot (·) does the work of a semicolon, quotations use «guillemets», dates are written day first (7/3/2026 is 7 March), and numbers use the decimal comma with a point for thousands (1.234,56). Capital letters carry no accents, so all-caps headings are ambiguous out of context, and Greek and Latin capitals share many shapes (Α/A, Β/B, Ε/E, Η/H, Ρ/P, Χ/X), which rough scans quietly confuse. Greek runs somewhat longer than English, so type size and line breaks adjust to fit.

Translate your document and keep its structure

The translator keeps your file’s structure while translating the text in context. The downloaded format depends on the source file.

What people translate to and from Greek

Civil documents for citizenship, marriage and residence

Greek citizenship by descent runs on municipal paper: the ληξιαρχική πράξη γέννησης (birth registration act), the πιστοποιητικό οικογενειακής κατάστασης (family status certificate), extracts from the δημοτολόγιο (municipal roll) and the μητρώο αρρένων (male register), marriage certificates, military status certificates and criminal record extracts. Applicants in the United States, Australia, Canada, the UK and Germany use them to trace an ancestor's registration, and the older entries are handwritten, in katharevousa, and stamped. Translate them here to know what each document says and what is still missing from a file, then have the final set certified. The same documents serve spouse visas, residence permits and pension claims.

Property, tax and inheritance paperwork

Anyone who inherits or owns property in Greece from abroad ends up reading notarial deeds (συμβόλαια) drawn up by a συμβολαιογράφος, boundary descriptions in στρέμματα that name the neighbours, Ε9 property declarations, ΕΝΦΙΑ tax notices, declarations and objections for the Κτηματολόγιο (the national cadastre), and letters that cite an ΑΦΜ tax number and a ΔΟΥ tax office. Wills, acceptance-of-inheritance deeds and powers of attorney go the other way as often as not, drafted in English for a lawyer in Athens or Thessaloniki to work from. Deeds from the 1950s to 1970s are in katharevousa and read like a different language from today's forms.

University records and academic papers

Students translate the Απολυτήριο Λυκείου (school leaving certificate, graded out of 20), the πτυχίο (degree) and the αναλυτική βαθμολογία (course-by-course transcript, graded out of 10) for admissions offices and credential evaluators, and translate foreign degrees into Greek for recognition by ΔΟΑΤΑΠ. Researchers upload Greek-language scholarship that never appears in English: excavation reports, Byzantine and Ottoman-period studies, theology, law, modern Greek literature and history. Material in Ancient or Koine Greek, from Homer to the New Testament and the Church Fathers, belongs on the Ancient Greek document page rather than here.

Business, medical and everyday documents

Contracts, invoices (τιμολόγια), company documents for an ΑΕ, ΕΠΕ or ΙΚΕ, extracts from the ΓΕΜΗ commercial registry, ΕΦΚΑ social insurance statements and pension correspondence all cross the language line in both directions, as do hospital discharge notes and medical reports for patients treated in Greece or continuing treatment abroad. Bank, utility and insurance letters, rental agreements for a flat in Athens, and Greek-language product documentation for exporters round it out. English to Greek matters as much here: manuals, terms of service and HR material for Greek staff need proper formal Greek, in the plural of politeness and with the accents in place.

What to watch for in Greek document translation

Names cause the most trouble. Greek has no single romanisation in daily use: passports and identity cards follow the ELOT 743 standard, older papers follow others, so Γιώργος Χατζής can be Giorgos Chatzis, Georgios Hadjis or George Hatzis across one person's papers, and a certified translation must match the passport. Surnames change form by gender (Παπαδόπουλος for him, Παπαδοπούλου for her) and by case, and a translation that 'corrects' a woman's surname to the masculine form, or copies a father's name in the genitive, creates a person who does not exist. Punctuation misleads: a semicolon is a question mark, the raised dot is a semicolon, 7/3 is 7 March, and 1.500 is one thousand five hundred. All-caps headings drop accents, so ΝΟΜΟΣ ΑΤΤΙΚΗΣ is the Prefecture of Attica (νομός), not a law (νόμος). Official Greek runs on abbreviations that need expansion rather than transliteration: ΑΦΜ (tax number), ΑΜΚΑ (social security number), ΑΔΤ (identity card number), ΔΟΥ (tax office), ΚΕΠ (citizen service centre). Official documents from before the late 1970s are generally in katharevousa, with polytonic accents and older endings a modern reader half-recognises. Going into Greek, register is the trap: formal letters and contracts use the plural of politeness, adjectives must agree in gender with the person addressed, and an accent in the wrong place changes the word. These are judgment calls, which is what the Advanced tier is for.

Greek document translation FAQ

Is this Greek document translator free?
You can try it free, with no account needed, and signing in gives you a larger daily allowance. Pro and Scholar are there for longer documents and regular use.
Can it read a scanned or photographed Greek document?
Yes. Upload a JPG, PNG or HEIC photo, or a PDF that is really a scan, and the text is read before translating. Printed monotonic Greek comes through well. The cases to check are polytonic diacritics on older print, which can be dropped or misread, Greek and Latin look-alike capitals on mixed-language pages, and the stamps and signatures that cover parts of certificates. Handwriting, including the older municipal and parish registers that genealogists bring, varies a lot with the hand, so read those results as an aid to deciphering rather than a finished transcription.
How accurate is it? What is the difference between Fast and Advanced?
Fast is for volume and gist: reading a report or a pile of correspondence quickly. Advanced runs a frontier model and is the right choice for anything official or old. It is better at recovering names from the cases Greek puts them in (a certificate names the father in the genitive, and the base form has to come back out), at katharevousa endings and vocabulary in pre-1980s documents, at legal and tax terminology, and at writing formal Greek in the plural of politeness when English goes in. For a deed, a certificate or a medical report, use Advanced and still check every name and number.
Will the translation keep my document's original layout?
The translator produces a translated PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel or EPUB file that aims to preserve the original layout, including tables, columns and headers. Text size, fonts and line breaks may change, so review the result against the original. Greek usually runs longer than English, so the formatted output adjusts type size and line breaks to fit.
Can I submit this translation to a Greek authority, a consulate or USCIS?
Not on its own. Greek authorities generally accept translations made by a lawyer or by a certified translator on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' register, and consulates, USCIS and universities abroad require a certified translation with a signed accuracy statement, which machine output is not. Use this to read your documents, decide which pages a filing actually needs, and check the certified version when it comes back, especially the spelling of names, which must match the passport.
Which Greek do I get, Greece or Cyprus? What about older or ancient texts?
Standard Modern Greek, which is the written language of documents in both Greece and Cyprus; Cypriot dialect is spoken rather than written in official material, and many Cypriot documents are issued in English as well. Older documents in katharevousa or polytonic spelling can be uploaded and translate into plain modern English. Ancient, Koine and Byzantine Greek, including church texts, are different languages for translation purposes and have their own page.
What file types can I upload?
PDF, Word (DOCX), PowerPoint (PPTX), Excel (XLSX) and EPUB, plus JPG, PNG and HEIC photos of paper documents. Spreadsheets keep their cell structure and presentations their slide order. Free and Pro accept up to 20MB and 100,000 extracted characters per file; Scholar accepts up to 50MB and 1,000,000 characters.
