How Indonesian documents come out
Upload a PDF, Word file, or a photo of a paper document and translate it between English and Indonesian while preserving the layout. Indonesian output is standard formal Bahasa Indonesia — the register used in contracts, ijazah, and letters that open with "Dengan hormat". You can try it free, without an account.

Indonesian is written in the same 26-letter Latin alphabet as English, left to right, with no diacritics — so nothing mirrors and nothing needs transliterating. The realities live elsewhere. Spelling was reformed in 1947 and again in 1972, so older paperwork — land records, colonial-era certificates, anything typewritten before the mid-seventies — uses oe for u, dj for j, and tj for c (Djakarta for Jakarta), and personal names legally keep their old spellings to this day: Soeharto is not a typo, and must not be modernized on a certificate that has to match a passport. Documents from before independence are often not Indonesian at all but Dutch, the administrative language of the colony. Numbers are formatted the continental way — a period groups thousands and a comma marks decimals, so Rp1.500.000,50 is one and a half million rupiah, not one point five — and dates run day-month-year (17 Agustus 1945). Formal letters follow a codified structure with Nomor, Lampiran, and Perihal headers, a "Dengan hormat," salutation, and heavy use of passive di- verbs, and bureaucratic text is dense with acronyms (KTP, NPWP, SKCK) that carry most of the meaning. Translated Indonesian also runs noticeably longer than its English source, so the formatted output adjusts type size and line breaks to fit.
Translate your document and keep its structure
The translator keeps your file’s structure while translating the text in context. The downloaded format depends on the source file.
- PDFs and scanned pages
- The translated PDF follows the page visually, with translated pages rendered as images. Selectable PDF text and identical fonts are not guaranteed.
- Word documents and PowerPoint presentations
- Start with DOCX or PPTX when you have it. Native paragraphs, table text and slide text can stay editable in the corresponding file format. Translated text inside pictures remains image content; review text wrapping and font changes in your editor.
- Excel workbooks and EPUB books
- Use the original XLSX or unprotected EPUB for a translated workbook or ebook. Review formulas, numbers and text cells in a workbook; check chapter order, navigation and text flow in your ebook reader.
What people translate to and from Indonesian
Immigration and civil documents
Akta kelahiran (birth certificates), the Kartu Keluarga family card, the buku nikah marriage booklet issued by the KUA, SKCK police clearances, and ijazah with their transcripts get translated to English every day for visa applications, university admissions, and foreign marriage registrations — Australia, the Netherlands, the US, Japan, and the Gulf are the common destinations. These arrive as stamped scans and phone photos, and the buku nikah is a small booklet you photograph page by page. Upload the images directly, use the Advanced tier, and check that names came through exactly as the passport spells them — including old spellings like Soe- that must not be modernized.
Contracts and business with Indonesian parties
Indonesia's language law (Law 24 of 2009) requires agreements involving Indonesian parties to have an Indonesian-language version, and an Indonesian court has voided an English-only contract for lacking one — so business with Indonesia runs on bilingual documents. Upload the Indonesian half of a bilingual agreement to see precisely what it commits you to, or translate an akta pendirian (deed of establishment), tender documents, tax and licensing paperwork, or an employment contract into English for headquarters. Going into Indonesian, the output is the formal register a ministry or counterparty expects — a draft to hand local counsel, not a substitute for one.
Academic reading and research
Indonesian universities publish skripsi, theses, and journal articles in Indonesian across open repositories, and researchers on Southeast Asian politics, Islam, ecology, and history mine them constantly. In the other direction, tens of thousands of Indonesian students abroad translate sources and coursework, plus their own abstracts into English, which most Indonesian journals now require. EPUB support handles whole books, translated into prose you can search and quote.
Family papers and land documents
Families sit on papers spanning three spelling systems: letters and deeds in pre-1972 orthography (Djakarta, tjinta), girik and other old land-tenure papers needed to settle an inheritance, and — for the large Indo-Dutch community in the Netherlands — records from before independence that turn out to be in Dutch rather than Indonesian. Photograph each page flat and well lit and upload it; we read old spellings as the modern words they are, printed and stamped text comes through reliably, and where a page is actually Dutch, that is a separate language option on the site.
What to watch for in Indonesian document translation
Indonesian marks neither tense nor plural, so going into English a system must infer from aspect words like sudah and akan whether something already happened or is yet to — weak systems flatten every verb into the present and every noun into the singular, which on a contract or a medical record is not a cosmetic error. Going the other way, English "we" is genuinely ambiguous: Indonesian forces a choice between kami (excluding the reader) and kita (including them), which changes what a letter actually commits you to, and English "you" fans out into Anda, Saudara, kamu, or Bapak/Ibu with a name — the wrong pick turns a formal letter rude or a family letter stiff. Indonesian and Malay are close enough that carelessly trained models blend them, and the false friends are treacherous: kereta, pejabat, and budak each mean something different in Jakarta than in Kuala Lumpur. Numbers get misread through the swapped separators (Rp1.500 is fifteen hundred rupiah, not one and a half), day-month dates get flipped into month-day, acronyms like SKCK and NPWP mean nothing translated literally and need expanding, and formal Indonesian's passive di- constructions turn into sludge if rendered word for word as English passives. The Advanced tier exists largely because these are judgment calls, not lookup problems.
Indonesian document translation FAQ
- Is it free to translate a PDF to Indonesian?
- You can try it free, with no account needed, and signing in gives you a larger daily allowance. Pro and Scholar are there for longer documents and regular use. The upload limits without an account and on Free or Pro are 20MB and 100,000 extracted characters per file; Scholar allows 50MB and 1,000,000 characters.
- Can it read scanned documents or photos of Indonesian paperwork?
- Yes. Upload a scanned PDF or a JPG, PNG, or HEIC photo and we run OCR before translating. Stamped aktas, booklet pages from a buku nikah, and old typewritten records all work — including pre-1972 spellings like oe and dj, which we read as the modern words they are while leaving names spelled as printed. Photograph each page flat, well lit, and straight on; faded stamps and handwriting on old land papers are what fail first, and the Advanced tier recovers more from rough scans.
- Will the translation keep my document's original layout?
- The translator produces a translated PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel or EPUB file that aims to preserve the original layout, including tables, columns and headers. Text size, fonts and line breaks may change, so review the result against the original. Indonesian text is usually longer than the same content in English, so the formatted output adjusts type size and line breaks to fit.
- How accurate is it? What is the difference between Fast and Advanced?
- Fast is for a quick reading of what a document says. Advanced runs a frontier model and is noticeably better exactly where Indonesian is hardest — inferring English tense from context, the kami/kita distinction, legal boilerplate, and expanding bureaucratic acronyms like SKCK into words. For anything you will sign, submit, or pay against, use Advanced and have a fluent reader check the critical lines.
- Will the Indonesian output be formal enough for official documents?
- Yes. Documents come out in standard formal Indonesian (bahasa baku) — Anda rather than kamu, the conventions of a surat resmi where the document calls for them, and vocabulary that follows the KBBI. On input we handle the informal register too: chat exports and personal messages written in Jakarta slang (gue, nggak, banget) translate as the casual English they are, not as stiff officialese.
- Is Indonesian the same as Malay?
- Close relatives, different standards — and for documents the difference matters. Spelling, officialese, and everyday vocabulary diverge, with false friends in both directions: kereta is a train in Indonesian and a car in Malay, pejabat an official versus an office. A document for an Indonesian ministry, court, or university should be in Indonesian; if you need Malay for Malaysia, Singapore, or Brunei, it is a separate language option in our translator.
- Can I use this for visa applications or other official submissions?
- We give you the translation, not the certification. Indonesian authorities and most embassies require a sworn translator (penerjemah tersumpah) for official filings, and immigration services abroad want a signed accuracy statement a machine cannot provide. In practice people use us to read their documents, prepare drafts, and check what a sworn translator returned — then have the certified copy produced for the filing itself.
