About Sukuma
Sukuma belongs to the Northeast Bantu branch of the Niger-Congo family and is spoken mainly in northwestern Tanzania, especially around the southern shores of Lake Victoria. It is one of Tanzania’s largest first languages, with roughly 8 to 10 million speakers by many estimates. Sukuma is usually written with the Latin alphabet, especially in educational, religious, and community materials.
Like many Bantu languages, Sukuma organizes nouns into grammatical classes that shape agreement across the sentence, so adjectives, verbs, and other words often change form to match the noun. Sukuma is closely related to Nyamwezi, and the two have sometimes been discussed together because of their geographic proximity and partial mutual intelligibility. The Sukuma people are also well known for a rich tradition of dance, praise poetry, and performance linked to ceremonies and community life.
