About Teochew
Teochew belongs to the Southern Min branch of Sinitic within the Sino-Tibetan family. It is spoken mainly in the Chaoshan region of eastern Guangdong in southern China, and also in large overseas communities in Southeast Asia, especially Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, and Malaysia. Estimates vary, but it is often described as having around 10 to 15 million speakers. Like other Chinese varieties, it is usually written with Chinese characters, though everyday speech is often far less standardized in writing than Mandarin.
A distinctive feature of Teochew is its rich tone system and its preservation of some older final consonants, traits it shares with other Southern Min varieties but not with Mandarin. Teochew is closely related to Hokkien yet not fully mutually intelligible with it in ordinary conversation. Outside China, it has had an important historical role as a community language among Chaoshan migrants, and in Thailand in particular it long shaped trade networks, family associations, and local Chinese opera traditions.
