About Yemeni Arabic

Yemeni Arabic belongs to the Semitic branch of the Afroasiatic language family and is spoken mainly in Yemen, with related varieties also used by Yemeni communities in neighboring Gulf countries and the wider diaspora. It is generally treated as a group of Arabic vernaculars rather than a single standardized language. Estimates vary, but around 15 to 20 million speakers is a reasonable range. In writing, speakers use the Arabic script, while formal education, news, and official documents usually rely on Modern Standard Arabic.

A well-known feature of many Yemeni varieties is the pronunciation of the classical letter qaf as g, so a word like qalam may be heard with an initial g sound. Yemeni Arabic also preserves a number of older Arabic vocabulary items and grammatical patterns that have attracted the interest of linguists. In cultural life, it is the language of everyday storytelling, poetry, and song, while written literature in Yemen has traditionally been produced largely in Classical Arabic or Modern Standard Arabic rather than in local speech.
